What Part of the Body Has the Most Bones?

Your hands and feet hold 106 of your 206 bones, more than half your skeleton. See the bone count for every body region and why hands and feet need so many.

When you think of the skeleton, you probably picture the skull, the spine or the long bones of the legs. But if you count bones by region, the answer surprises most people. The small, flexible parts at the ends of your arms and legs are the most bone-dense areas of your body.

Key facts at a glance

  • An adult skeleton usually has 206 bones. See our full guide: how many bones are in the human body.
  • Each hand (including the wrist) has 27 bones.
  • Each foot (including the ankle) has 26 bones.
  • Hands and feet together: 106 bones, about 51% of the skeleton.
  • The skull has 22 bones; the spine has 26 in adults.

The 27 bones of the hand

Each hand is built from three groups of bones:

  • Carpals (8): the small, pebble-shaped wrist bones: scaphoid, lunate, triquetrum, pisiform, trapezium, trapezoid, capitate and hamate. They sit in two rows and let the wrist bend and rotate.
  • Metacarpals (5): the long bones inside your palm, one leading to each finger and the thumb.
  • Phalanges (14): the finger bones. Each finger has three (proximal, middle and distal), while the thumb has only two.

So many small bones, joined by many joints and ligaments, give the hand its fine control. That is what lets you write, button a shirt, play an instrument or hold an egg without crushing it.

The 26 bones of the foot

  • Tarsals (7): the ankle and rear-foot bones, including the talus (which connects to the leg) and the calcaneus, or heel bone, the largest bone in the foot.
  • Metatarsals (5): the long bones across the middle of the foot.
  • Phalanges (14): the toe bones: three in each small toe and two in the big toe.

The foot’s bones form arches that act like a spring. They absorb shock with every step and then help push you forward. Many small bones let the foot adapt to uneven ground in a way one solid bone never could.

Why do hands and feet need so many bones?

More bones mean more joints, and more joints mean more ways to move. Your hands are built for precision: grasping, pinching and manipulating tools. Your feet are built for balance and shock absorption, and they constantly adjust to the ground beneath you. Both jobs need flexibility, which is why these regions are packed with small bones instead of a few big ones.

Is it the same for everyone?

Not exactly. Some people have extra small bones called sesamoid bones (small bones embedded in tendons) or accessory bones in the hands and feet. Every adult has a sesamoid bone in each knee (the kneecap, or patella) and usually two under the big toe. Only the kneecaps are counted in the standard total of 206, which is why the exact number of bones varies slightly from person to person.

Frequently asked questions

What part of the body has the most bones?

The hands. Each hand and wrist has 27 bones, so the two hands together contain 54 bones, about a quarter of the adult skeleton.

Which has more bones, the hand or the foot?

The hand has 27 bones and the foot has 26. The difference comes from the wrist, which has 8 carpal bones, while the ankle has 7 tarsal bones.

What is the smallest bone in the body?

The stapes, one of the three tiny bones in the middle ear. It is only about 3 millimeters long.

What is the largest bone in the body?

The femur (thigh bone). It is the longest and strongest bone in the human body, roughly a quarter of a person’s height.

Do babies have more bones than adults?

Yes. Babies are born with about 270 to 300 bones and cartilage pieces, which gradually fuse into the 206 bones of an adult. Read more: how many bones are babies born with.
